Kwantlen University College School of Business is the second largest business school in Western Canada-consisting of over 150 business faculty, 3500 students annually who are enrolled in one of the 17 business credentials available. Recently awarded the prestigious international accreditation by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the Kwantlen School of Business stands with UBC and SFU as the only internationally accredited business schools in B.C.

Kwantlen offers two HRM programs

  • A four-year BBA in Human Resources Management that students can enter in Year 3 if they meet program requirements.
  • A Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resources Management for students already holding a degree.
Both programs were launched in 2006 after extensive development that used the CHRP Required Professional Capabilities (RPCs) as a design focus for the programs. All of the HRMT courses are specifically tied to the RPCs through the assessments in the courses. Core HRMT courses common to both the BBA and Post Baccalaureate program include:

Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Degree & Honours BBA Degree
OUC offers a four-year (120 credits) Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree where students who want to focus on Human Resources Management (HRM) are recommended to take all the HRM courses listed, as well as many other required business courses in the areas of organizational behaviour, management, strategic management, accounting, marketing, business communication, financial management, economics, law, ethics, management science, statistics, business & Canadian government policy and computer applications. Students are recommended (required in Honours BBA) to take BUAD 491 and 492 (Business Research Methods & Business Research Projects) where they learn research methodology, prepare a research proposal and have the opportunity to conduct Human Resource Management research for a business client. Students are required to take BUAD 272 (Policy Simulation), which applies many of the CHRP competencies in a business computer simulation. This option covers over 97% of the CHRP competencies for the knowledge exam.

Diploma in Business Administration, HRM Option
OUC offers a two-year (60 credits) Diploma in Business Administration where students can take an option in Human Resources Management. In this option students are recommended to take the six (*) HRM courses listed, as well as many other required business courses in the areas of organizational behaviour, management, accounting, marketing, business communication, financial management, economics, law and computer applications. Students are required to take BUAD 272 (Policy Simulation), which applies many of the CHRP competencies in a business computer simulation. This option covers over 90% of the CHRP competencies for the knowledge exam.

Business Administration Certificate, HRM Option
OUC offers a 12 course (36 credits) Business Administration Certificate that provides students with an opportunity to study Human Resources Management. In this option students are recommended to take a minimum of six HRM courses (*) listed. This option covers over 85% of the CHRP competencies for the knowledge exam.

Business Studies Certificate, HRM Option
OUC offers a 6 course (18 credits) Business Administration Certificate that provides students with an opportunity to study Human Resources Management. In this option students are required to take BUAD 269 and recommended to take five other HRM courses (*) listed and/or BUAD 262. This option covers over 80% of the CHRP competencies for the knowledge exam.

Post-Diploma Certificate in Business Administration, HRM Option
OUC offers a 6 course (18 credits) post-diploma certificate in Business Administration that provides business diploma and degree graduate students with an opportunity to study Human Resources Management. This option covers over 95% of the CHRP competencies for the knowledge exam.

Distance/Online Courses, Bridging Programs into the BBA degree and Prior Learning Assessment
The department of Business Administration offers many business and HRM courses through distance/online, bridging programs into the BBA and PLA for those with previous training, education and work experience.

In April 1, 2005, the British Columbia Open University (BCOU), a division of the Open Learning Agency, became a part of the newly created Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and is now known as Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL). The "COM" courses represent required courses for the BCom degree, regardless of area of concentration, (international business, entrepreneurship, hospitality/services management, and general business). These courses cannot be taken individually, i.e., as a single course application. Required core courses that do not cover any competency area required for the HR certification have not been included. In addition to these core courses, courses specific to an area of concentration, and course electives need to be taken to obtain the BCom degree. Available course electives that cover HR competency areas are also listed below. These electives may be available as single course applications, but check availability with the Faculty of Business for information on course requirements towards the BCom degree.
