As of January 1, 2013, The CHRP designation will have an experience requirement.
The CHRP Experience Requirement is a formal step in earning the CHRP designation that requires candidates to demonstrate three or more years of professional experience in human resources within the last ten years.
This eligibility requirement will come into effect on January 1, 2013. Everyone who passess the National Knowledge Exam® (NKE) and becomes a CHRP candidate after this time will be required to prove they have the required type and length of experience before being eligible to sit the National Professional Practice Assessment® (NPPA).
If you are a CHRP Candidate prior to January 1, 2013, you will have five years, from the date you pass, to sit and pass the NPPA. You will not be required to prove that you meet the Experience Requirement even if you sit the exam after January 1, 2013.
Experience has always been an integral component in achieving the CHRP designation. This requirement asks HR practitioners to demonstrate that they have worked in an HR role for a minimum of three years. Experience must be gained at the professional level, which means that you must be using technical HR knowledge and have a level of autonomy in the application of your HR knowledge. Duties that are purely administrative requiring no HR knowledge do not count. You do not need to be a manager or a supervisor to be able to acquire the necessary experience. The experience must cover at least two of the seven functional dimensions of the Required Professional Competencies. The three years of experience can be gained in a range of roles and up to two years of the experience can be gained working outside of Canada. One year of the experience must be working for an organization in Canada. The total of three years experience must have been gained within the last ten years.
HR practitioners can work toward the Experience Requirement in any sector of the economy: industry, government, public practice, professional associations, education, healthcare, or not-for-profits – essentially anywhere that has a human resources function.
Please review the CHRP Validation of Experience form as an example of the documentation needed to comfirm the experience requirement is met.
