Mike Cass, CHRP
President

Mike has recently been appointed Vice-President, Human Resources at Western Forest Products. He has over 30 years experience in the coastal forest industry covering all the major business groups – pulp and paper, timberlands, and manufacturing. He has a wide breadth of knowledge in human resources and safety, having been involved in key roles in both of these primary functions. Mike holds an undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser in General Business Studies, a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Royal Roads and a Master’s Certificate in Project Management from University of Victoria and York Schulich.

Shannon Joly, CHRP
President Elect

Shannon is the Director of Human Resources for School District 41 in Burnaby. Having worked in both the Post Secondary and Public Education sectors for several years, Shannon has earned a reputation for leadership, building relationships, creating innovative programs and fostering a positive labour relations environment. Shannon has also been a dedicated volunteer with BC HRMA since 1998 and has held leadership roles on regional Advisory Councils and volunteered for a variety of committee’s. Shannon represents BC HRMA on the Standards Advisory Committee for CCHRA. Having been a previous BC HRMA award recipient, Shannon is dedicated to giving back to a profession for which she is extremely passionate about.

Mike Desjardins

Mike Desjardins
Secretary/Treasurer

A graduate of UBC’s Sauder School of Business with a Bachelors of Commerce, Mike has spent the past 18 years transforming businesses. From entrepreneurial business to large public companies and public-sector organizations, Mike and the team at ViRTUS focus on driving a return on investment in every engagement they work on in the areas of strategy planning and implementation, leadership development, change management, and succession planning, through to the full spectrum of organizational development.

Mike was invited to join the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) and was President of the Vancouver Chapter for 2007/8.  In January 2006, Mike was the recipient of the BIV Top Forty Under 40 Award.

In June 2010, Mike was the President of Purity Water Treatment Products, a company which manufactures and distributes water treatment products throughout North America with offices in Surrey, Oakville, and San Diego. Before Purity, Mike was the VP of Marketing and New Dealer Acquisitions for Beachcomber Hot Tubs Worldwide.

Lewisa Anciano

Lewisa Anciano, CHRP

Lewisa Anciano is currently the Vice President, People responsible for innovative people programs and practices at Coast Capital Savings. She is also an entrepreneur, who founded Kickstart HR Inc, a ready-to-go HR toolkit to jump start any HR initiative/department with clients in North America, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. She is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management. She has completed the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business Advanced Management program. Lewisa has served on the Board of Directors of BC HRMA since 2007 and was Chair of the Finance Committee. Between 2005 and 2008, she taught Management Courses in the Business Continuing Studies Program at Langara College. Lewisa is passionate about organizational transformation and effectiveness, and igniting the power of teams and individuals to execute on corporate strategy.

Janice Antaya Finlayson

Janice Antaya-Finlayson, CHRP

With over 20 years of HR experience in the retail, industrial and public sectors, Janice is the driving force behind Best Buy’s HR strategy. Since joining Best Buy in 2004 she has been a member of the senior management team integrating HR with the business strategy and formulating strong business partnerships to enhance organizational performance. Through the implementation of various programs at Best Buy she has enabled the organization to attract, retain and engage top talent. Her commitment to innovation and passion for the Best Buy difference has shaped the organization’s approach to winning through the engagement of its workforce. Prior to joining Best Buy, Janice has held senior HR positions within a variety of national and international organizations including MTU, an international aerospace division of Daimler-Benz where she worked with business units in Germany, China, the United States and Canada, Shoppers Drug Mart, Starbucks and the Abbotsford School District. Janice has been a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) since 1996, a proud member of BC HRMA since 1989 and has served as a Director on the Board since 2010.

Shaun Carpenter

Shaun Carpenter

Shaun is a Principal with Pinton Forrest & Madden Executive Search and has been involved with BC HRMA since 2007. He joined the Coastal Vancouver Advisory Council for the first time in September 2008. Shaun has worked in the executive search business for 12 years and is well respected in the industry for his aptitude in candidate development and client relations. His thorough, insightful approach gives clients confidence that their needs are being met in a professional, timely manner. Shaun also has past experience as Manager, Human Resources with a leading Canadian health insurance provider where he was responsible for recruitment, retention, coaching, performance management, and employee/labour relations. He received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Calgary, which included studies abroad at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland.

Gregory Conner

Gregory Conner, CHRP

Greg Conner is the Vice President of Human Resources and Communications at HP Advanced Solutions in Victoria. Greg has more than 20 years of human resources, employee recruitment, union relations and performance planning experience in both public and private sector organizations. With his expertise in employee relations, Greg has created and been recognized for many innovative employee engagement programmes and has made great progress in developing positive and progressive union relationships in a variety of environments. Greg is also a strong proponent of corporate social responsibility and serves a number of charities including United Way, where he is the Campaign Chair for the 2011 Greater Victoria Campaign. Greg has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Victoria.

David DeLong

David DeLong, CHRP

Dave is a Senior Manager, Human Resources for Teck Metals Ltd., Trail Operations, which is one of the world’s largest integrated refining and smelting facilities with approximately 1,600 employees. Dave has over 30 years of experience in Human Resources and holds a Graduate Diploma in Human Resources from Rotman’s School of Business, a Master of Science Degree in Safety Management from Central Missouri State University, a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Physical Education from Memorial University. Dave also serves on the Board of Directors for Selkirk College in Castlegar.

Sandra Keyton, CHRP

Sandra Keyton is Vice President, Global Human Resources with Westport Innovations, Inc. She is responsible for leading the human resources function for Westport, a clean energy technology company with 950 employees and business operations in nine countries globally.  As a member of Westport’s executive team Sandra is a champion of organizational and people development.  She also works closely with the Human Resources and Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors to ensure best practice in executive compensation and HR governance.

Sandra began her career in human resources with Westcoast Energy, Inc.  She has worked in both publicly traded and private companies in a number of sectors, particularly in the Technology industry, and has significant experience in International HR.  Sandra graduated with Honours from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Human Resources Management and holds her Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation.

Sandra has held several volunteer positions, specifically with the United Way of the Lower Mainland, BC Children’s Hospital and BC HRMA.

Cameron MacKenzie, CHRP

Cameron is the Director, Professional Services, CGA-Canada. He brings 16 years of experience from the telecommunications industry and another 10 years from the Certified General Accountants Association. His experience includes executive and management education, professional development, labour relations, and accounting.

Cameron has been recognized for improving member value and engagement by providing quality services important to members, providing strategic financial training to support business transformation and improve the labour negotiation process, and for leading a practice analysis which defines and defends certification requirements.

He is a board member on the New York Institute of Technology Business Advisory Board and previously served on the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Accounting Advisory Committee.

Cameron is a Certified General Accountant and earned his Teaching Certificate and Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia.

Peggy O'Brien

Peggy O’Brien, LL.B

M.J. (Peggy) O’Brien is a partner in the Vancouver office of the business law firm of Lawson Lundell LLP, which also has offices in Yellowknife, NWT and Calgary, Alberta.  Prior to attending the University of Victoria Faculty of Law, Peggy was the Personnel Manager at Victoria General Hospital in Victoria, BC and the Director of Employee Relations at Lion’s Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, BC.  Since her call to the BC Bar in 1986, she has practiced employment, labour, human rights, and occupational health and safety law at Lawson Lundell LLP.  She is a member of the Labour, Employment and Human Rights Subsections of the Canadian Bar Association and a Director of the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association.

Len Posyniak

Len Posyniak, CHRP

Len Posyniak is Vice-President, Human Resources for the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC). Len is responsible for providing strategic human resource services in support of the company’s goal of high performing, engaged and capable people. He joined ICBC in 2006 after prior executive experience with Accenture and Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Len holds an MBA from the University of Saskatchewan.

Peter Saulnier

Peter Saulnier, CHRP

Peter is a Partner with Logan HR Management. He has consulted in human resources for over 15 years, with experience in career transition, compensation, and organization development. Most recently he was VP & General Manager for Toombs KWA. Previously he was Practice Leader for Watson Wyatt’s Human Capital Group in western Canada. Peter has been interviewed by and published in numerous periodicals, including the Globe & Mail, ROB Magazine, BC Business, BusinessInVancouver, and www.working.com. He has consulted in the US, Europe and Asia, and speaks regularly on a wide range of HR and business issues. Peter is a past Chair of the BC region of WorldatWork, the international association of compensation professionals, and he holds an MBA with a specialization in Human Resources & Organization Development from the University of British Columbia.

Terrence Schmaltz, CHRP

TJ Schmaltz started his career as a labour and employment lawyer in Vancouver working with a variety of public and private sector clients before moving into the HR world.  As an HR practitioner, TJ has worked in a variety of roles.  These include working in maximum security jails with BC’s Adult Corrections Branch and as the Director of Labour Relations and Occupational Health and Safety at BC’s largest retailer.  In 2009, he became the Executive Director of Human Resources and Payroll Services for the District of West Vancouver.  He is also a regular speaker and a guest lecturer at Capilano University as well as a part-time instructor with BCIT’s Business School teaching a variety of business, law and HR courses.  TJ also runs a management consulting firm that specializes in strategic human resource management practices.  TJ is a proud and passionate BC HRMA member with a desire to help shape the future of the HR profession as an organization’s key strategic driver.

Simon Evans

Simon Evans, CHRP

CEO, Ex-OfficioSimon brings significant experience and capability in both association and corporate management roles. Before joining BC HRMA, Simon was the CEO of the BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association (BCRFA), where he contributed to the association achieving a prominent position in its industry. He has contributed to many industry committees and was a key participant in a taskforce for tourism/hospitality human resources. Prior to his role with the BCRFA, he spent 17 years with 7-Eleven Canada, in business development, marketing, operations and human resources roles, eventually serving as Vice President, Human Resources.
